Why dive here
With 169+ marine species recorded in the area - including dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales, ocean sunfish (mola mola) and octopuses - The Tunnel offers some of West Coast's richest cave diving. Water ranges 8-17°C, warmest July, August, September.
The Tunnel, on Ireland’s West Coast, offers a proper cave diving experience. It's a challenging site, really, with overhead environments and limited light, so we'd suggest it for experienced cave divers only. You’ll navigate through narrow passages, often with some surge, giving a raw feel of the ocean's power. It’s less about abundant marine life and more about the geology and the thrill of the exploration.
Safety Notes
Overhead environment - never enter without proper cave/cavern training, redundant equipment, and a guideline.
Cold water this month (avg 14°C). Drysuit or thick wetsuit (7mm+) recommended.
