VILLAGE QUEEN - West Coast
The Village Queen is not your typical Irish wreck. Sure, it’s deep, almost 30 metres down, and the water is chilly, but this fishing vessel has a real presence. We love dropping onto the stern, where the prop shaft still stretches out, leading you towards the bow. The wreck itself is a jumble, a dangerous wreck designation means penetration is really only for the most experienced, but the exterior offers plenty to explore. Look for conger eels peering from every dark recess, and we’ve seen some massive lobsters tucked into its plates. This wreck is a magnet for juvenile fish, darting through the rusted metalwork. It’s a site for divers who appreciate the history and the challenging conditions that come with Irish diving. We always suggest a good torch; even on a bright day, the gloom down here adds to the atmosphere. Dive this one for the raw, rugged appeal of a wreck claiming its place on the seabed.
