Wreck of U-2511 - West Coast

Diving a German U-boat off the west coast of Ireland? Yeah, it’s as cool as it sounds. The U-2511, a Type XXI U-boat, was scuttled after WWII, and now she sits upright, mostly intact, an impressive hulk on the seabed. This isn’t a rummage-through-the-bowls kind of wreck, but more of a glide-over, absorb-the-history experience. We love seeing the sheer size of her, the conning tower still defiant against the current, and picturing the claustrophobic life within those steel walls. Visibility here can be a bit of a lottery, sometimes a solid 15 metres, other days a murky 5. But even on the greyer days, the sheer scale of the U-boat impresses. It’s the kind of dive where you feel the history pressing in. Look for the wolf fish nestled in crevices around the hull, their grumpy faces peering out. We’ve also spotted some surprisingly large pollock taking shelter inside the torpedo tubes. It’s a challenging dive, often with strong currents, so it’s definitely one for experienced cold-water wreckies who appreciate a bit of historical weight over coral rainbows. Get the tides right and you’ll have a smoother ride.
