JOYTON - Comino

We’ve always had a soft spot for the Joyton, tucked away off Dragonara Point. It’s barely a wreck dive in the conventional sense, sitting in just a metre of water, but that’s its charm. This old sailing vessel, which went up in flames back in ‘76, is now a perfect playground for snorkelers and freedivers, and we even take our new Open Water students here for a gentle introduction to wrecks. It’s surprisingly atmospheric. You fin over what’s left of the hull, and it’s a mosaic of colourful algae and small anemones clinging to the timbers. Sunlight dapples through the water, making the whole scene shimmer. We love hovering over the engine room, picturing the fire that sealed its fate, and now it’s home to dozens of tiny blennies darting in and out of the crevices. Look closely and you’ll spot small octopus camouflaged against the wreck, especially in the late afternoon. It’s a completely different vibe than a deep wreck, more intimate, a living history lesson unfolding right beneath the surface. Go on a calm day; the visibility is usually excellent, and it feels like swimming through an open-air museum.
