X 40 (POSSIBLY) - Comino

The X 40, nestled in Comino’s Kilkara Creek, is a bit of a mystery, which we love. It’s definitely a lighter vessel, deliberately sunk here back in 1978 after being salvaged from Grand Harbour. You’re looking at around 20 metres long, sitting in just 5 metres of water, so it’s a brilliant, relaxed dive. We’d suggest going in the morning; the light filtering through the water around the wreck is just lovely. What makes this site a standout for us is how accessible it is. You can spend ages just finning around the hull, watching damselfish dart in and out of the crevices. The wreck itself has become a home for all sorts of small critters. Keep an eye out for blennies perched on the metalwork and the occasional small octopus tucked away. It’s a photographer’s dream for wide-angle shots with the sun directly overhead. This site really suits divers looking for a leisurely exploration, something a bit different from the deeper walls Malta is known for. It’s easy, beautiful, and you always feel like you’re discovering something new each time.
