DELFINA - Al Hoceima

The Delfina, a steamship that met its end back in 1940, rests in surprisingly shallow water near Al Hoceima. We’re talking a maximum depth of 15 metres, so it’s a site that gives you plenty of bottom time to really absorb it all. We love how accessible this wreck is. You descend onto the remains of a substantial vessel, over 100 metres long, that now forms an artificial reef. The structure itself is well-broken, but you can still make out the ship’s impressive scale. We’ve spent many dives tracing the hull, poking our heads into what would have been cargo holds, now colonised by clouds of small damselfish. Look for the glint of sunlight catching schools of sardines darting around the rusted metal. Visibility can be excellent here, making the whole wreck visible from above, which is always a treat. Our favourite part has to be the way the light plays on the various nooks and crannies, creating dramatic shadows. It’s perfect for divers who appreciate history and enjoy exploring a wreck without the added challenge of deep water or strong currents. Just glide around, take your time, and watch for the resident octopuses that often peek out from behind a twisted piece of steel.
