Pecio dique del Oeste - Balearic Islands

Pecio dique del Oeste, a name that doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, but this wreck certainly leaves an impression. It’s an old dredging barge, we think, sitting upright at around 28 metres. The visibility here can be excellent, sometimes pushing 30 metres, which is always a bonus when you're exploring a sunken vessel. What makes this wreck stand out for us isn't just its size, but how it’s been completely taken over by the sea. You’ll find schools of barracuda circling the superstructure, their silver scales flashing in the beams of your torch. Inside, where the cabins once were, now there are conger eels peering out from every nook and cranny. We’ve even spotted John Dory here, a real treat with their distinctive eye spot. The metal itself is encrusted with colourful anemones and sponges, a stark contrast to the rust. This is a dive for those who appreciate history and marine life intertwining. There are plenty of swim-throughs, but they’re wide and open enough that you don't feel squeezed. We'd suggest aiming for a morning dive; the light penetration is better then, illuminating the wreck beautifully. It’s a site that rewards slow exploration rather than a quick dash around.
