Dive Academy Santa Pola - Cabo de Palos
Okay, so Dive Academy Santa Pola, in Cabo de Palos. Forget the name for a minute, because this site itself is a real standout if you’re into the smaller, more intricate stuff the Med has to offer. We’re not talking about huge pelagics here, but rather a proper hunt for the interesting characters tucked into the rocks. Drop down and you're immediately struck by how much life is squeezed into every crevice. We’ve spent whole dives just poking around, spotting ornate wrasse flashing their colours against the rock, and those shy brown combers eyeing you from their hidey-holes. Keep an eye out for the slinky green wrasse darting through the slender seagrass – it's everywhere here, providing great cover for juvenile fish. Our favourite moment? Finding a loggerhead turtle cruising past one time, totally unexpected and just glorious. It’s generally a gentle dive, perfect for photographers wanting to take their time, or anyone who just loves a good slow ramble along a reef. Visibility is usually solid, allowing you to really pick out the detail on the black leather sponges. We’d suggest going in the morning; the light just hits differently, illuminating all those little nooks where the conger eels like to peek out.
