El Pecio - Cabo de Palos

El Pecio, often just called "The Wreck," off Cabo de Palos, isn't some pristine, intact vessel. Forget that picture. What you get here is a scattered, intriguing landscape of metal, twisted and broken, spread across the seabed. We love it because it feels like a genuine archaeological dig, more than just a boat. The most striking part for us is the sheer scale of the debris field. You'll find huge plates of steel, ribs of the hull, and strange, unidentifiable machinery half-buried in the sand. Sunlight dapples through the shallower sections, highlighting the rusty oranges and browns. Look closely, and you'll spot moray eels peering from crevices, their heads swaying gently. Octopus often camouflage themselves against the metal, their texture shifting to match the corroded surface. We've even seen barracuda schools cruise by in the blue, just beyond the wreck’s edge. This site is a fantastic drift dive on a decent current. Let it carry you over the fragments. It's a relaxed exploration for experienced divers who appreciate history and the way the sea reclaims things. Go early in the morning; the light is softer, and you often have the place to yourselves before the crowds arrive.
