la Vaca - Medes Islands

La Vaca, for us, is a bit of an unsung hero in the Medes Islands. Everyone talks about the tunnels, and rightly so, but we always find ourselves drawn back to this one. It’s not about grand swim-throughs, but rather the sheer density of life packed into a smaller, shallower area. We love dropping down into the cracks and crevices, feeling the slight surge, and just letting our eyes adjust to the sheer numbers of Oman porgies and salema schooling so tightly they shimmer like quicksilver. Visibility here can really play games, often changing from 20 metres to a milky 10 in a matter of hours, but don't let that put you off. It’s often in the slightly murkier water that we spot dusky groupers lurking, or catch the iridescent glow of a light-bulb sea squirt clinging to the rock face. Our favourite moments are often spent in the shallows, maybe 10-15 metres, just scanning the boulders for a curious scorpionfish or the flash of a red snapping shrimp. It’s a site for the patient observer, the diver who enjoys picking out the details rather than zooming past the big stuff. If you're into macro and just soaking in the buzzing ecosystem, La Vaca is a solid pick.
