ESCHERSHEIM - West Coast (Gothenburg)

The ESCHERSHEIM isn't just another wreck; it's a deep dive into history, resting upright on a sandy bottom, broken into two main sections. We love the way the ship's past as a German steamer, scuttled on its way to Oslo in 1940, still feels palpable here. Dropping down, you're immediately struck by the sheer scale of it, the bow and stern sections forming distinct landscapes for exploration. Our favourite part has to be the stern, where the prop shaft stands proud, completely encrusted with dead man's fingers and colourful anemones. Inside, the holds are surprisingly accessible, offering swim-throughs where schools of juvenile cod dart between the corroded metal. Visibility can be a bit variable here, so we'd suggest planning your dive for slack tide, ideally on a calm day, to really soak it all in. Look closely for the wolfish that often hide in the deeper crevices, watching you pass. This dive really suits those who appreciate a wreck with a story, and aren't afraid of a bit of chill in the water.
