Farners Wreck - West Coast (Gothenburg)

The Farners Wreck off Gothenburg is easily our favourite wreck dive on the Swedish west coast. It sits upright, mostly intact, on a silty bottom, usually around the 25-meter mark, though we’ve seen it deeper depending on the tide. Drop down the line and you’ll see its bow first, often shrouded in a shoal of juvenile cod, shimmering in the gloom. We love navigating the open cargo holds, where the light filters in from above, revealing the skeletal remains of its wooden superstructure. What makes Farners special isn’t just its history – a freighter sunk in 1913 – but how marine life has embraced it. Look closely among the rusted plating for nudibranchs, particularly the colourful sea lemons, grazing on the hydroids. We often find a grumpy conger eel peering out from a pipe, or a ling tucked deep within the engine room. Visibility can be a challenge here, often 5 to 10 metres, but that just adds to the atmospheric, ghostly feel. Bring a good torch, and don't rush. This is a dive for slow exploration, for finning through the shadows, imagining the ship's final moments. It's a proper wreck dive, best suited for those comfortable with deeper, darker conditions.
