GITANO - West Coast (Gothenburg)

Gitano. Now there’s a name that gets a nod from serious wreck divers on Sweden’s west coast. She's a steamship, sunk by a mine back in 1918, sitting upright and impressively intact at 42 metres. We love how the story of her demise is so present. You feel the history. Dropping down, the first thing you notice is the sheer scale. At 75 metres long, she dominates the seabed, draped in anemones and dead man’s fingers. The visibility here can be excellent, and seeing her bow emerge from the gloom is always a moment. Our favourite part has to be the bridge area; it’s collapsed but still recognisable, and big conger eels often lurk in the shadowed holds. Exploring the cargo holds offers a real sense of adventure, though penetration is definitely for experienced wreck divers only. Gitano is a serious dive for those comfortable at depth, offering a genuine historical encounter wrapped in the cool, green waters of the Kattegat. It’s not for the faint of heart, but for us, it's a standout.
