GODALMING (POSSIBLY) - West Coast (Gothenburg)

The Godalming is one of those wrecks that just gets under your skin. We've spent a fair few hours on her, and each time, something new seems to emerge from the gloom. She’s a steamship, sitting upright on a sandy bottom at 33 metres, her masts long gone but her superstructure surprisingly intact. You can fin along her deck, past the encrusted davits, imagining the frantic scramble as she went down in 1917, probably from a mine. What we really love about the Godalming is the sense of history that hangs heavy around her. Shoals of pollock dart through the holds, and the bridge area is often home to some chunky cod. Look closely, and you’ll spot colourful nudibranchs grazing on the metalwork, a stark contrast to the dark steel. Our favourite tip? Head down early on a calm day. The visibility can be surprisingly good, and that weak morning light filtering down really brings out the wreck's character. She's definitely one for experienced divers who appreciate a good historical wreck and don't mind a bit of a chill.
