GRETHE - West Coast (Gothenburg)

Grethe is a genuinely special little wreck, sitting in just four metres of water near Vrångö. We’ve spent many an hour finning around this site, and it’s always a delight. She was a small motor vessel, sunk in November 1944 after hitting a mine, and now she rests mostly intact on a sandy bottom. What makes Grethe such a standout is her accessibility and the way she’s become a home for so much local marine life. You can easily spend an entire dive exploring her hold, peering into the small cabins, and navigating around the bow. The visibility here can be excellent, especially on a calm day, letting the light filter down through the green water and really illuminate the wreck. We often see large schools of juvenile pollack darting through the superstructure, and crabs scuttling amongst the frames. For photographers, it’s a dream – the shallow depth means plenty of ambient light, and the details of the wreck, from rusted machinery to portholes, make for fantastic subjects. It’s a perfect site for new wreck divers or anyone wanting a relaxed, immersive experience with a bit of history.
