LAKE PLACID - West Coast (Gothenburg)

We’ll be honest, Lake Placid isn't going to win any awards for tropical colours. But for wreck diving in Sweden, this site is a standout, an absolute cracker. It’s an old carrier vessel, once called WARPARTH, now lying at 36 metres, and it’s a proper dive. The wreck is largely intact, a big, hulking shape on the seabed, and we love how the colder water here preserves so much of its character. You can still make out the superstructure, the deck gear, and the massive cargo holds that once carried… well, who knows what. Dropping down, the light fades quickly, and the wreck emerges from the gloom, often draped in fishing nets, which add to the spooky atmosphere but demand careful buoyancy. There’s no riot of colour, but we’ve seen some decent-sized cod lurking in the shadows, and the metal itself is softened by a film of marine growth, a kind of monochrome beauty. Our favourite part? The sheer scale of it, and the quiet dignity of a working vessel resting on the bottom. It suits divers who appreciate history and don't mind a bit of a chill; leave the shorty at home for this one. This isn't a dive for beginners, given the depth and potential for entanglement, but for experienced wreck enthusiasts, it’s a genuinely rewarding experience.
