Marina af Hönö - West Coast (Gothenburg)

Alright, Hönö Marina. Forget the typical Swedish dive images of granite walls and kelp forests. This spot is… different. We love it because it’s a masterclass in macro, even if it doesn’t scream 'epic dive site' from the surface. Drop in near the ferry terminal, careful of boat traffic, and you’re immediately into a surprisingly lively ecosystem. The seabed here is mostly silty, with scattered rocks and plenty of man-made debris that act as little hotels for critters. You’ll spend most of your time with your nose practically touching the bottom, hunting. We’ve found some incredible stuff here: tiny Cristal Gobies flitting over stones, Common Pipefish tucked into crevices, and more bristleworms than you can shake a stick at. Keep an eye out for the witch flounders, they camouflage incredibly well. It’s not a deep dive, maybe 10-12 meters at most, making it perfect for an extended bottom time. Visibility can be a bit hit or miss, often stirred up by boat traffic, so pick a calm day if you can. It’s an ideal site for photographers who enjoy the challenge of tiny subjects, or anyone who appreciates the quieter, more observant side of diving. We'd suggest a late afternoon dive; the light can be lovely filtering through the water. This isn’t a site for grand vistas, it’s for the patient, the observant, and those who get a real kick out of finding something truly small and unusual.
