MODENA - West Coast (Gothenburg)

The Modena, a steamship that went down in 1918, is a cracker of a wreck site on Sweden’s west coast. At just 11 meters, it’s a brilliant dive for newer wreck enthusiasts, or just a relaxed second dive. What we love about the Modena is how accessible it is, and the way the sea has really started to claim it back. You’ll find the bow section largely intact, rising a couple of meters off the seabed. Swimming inside the cargo holds is a real treat, especially on a day when the light penetrates just right, dappling through the deck plates. We always keep an eye out for the resident crabs scuttling across the metal, and the schools of small pollack that seem to hover in the gloom of the holds. The stern is a bit more broken up, but you can still make out the prop shaft. Be mindful of the kelp though, it can get pretty thick on the shallower parts of the wreck, swaying in the surge. It’s a great spot for a focused dive, maybe practicing some navigation or just enjoying the quiet atmosphere of a century-old ship.
