VELLAMO - West Coast (Gothenburg)
Vellamo is a proper beauty, a schooner that went down back in the 1800s. She’s shallow, only six metres at her deepest, which makes for some lovely long bottom times, even if the visibility isn’t always phenomenal. We usually find it’s a bit silty on the bottom, so good fin control is essential if you want to keep the wreck visible. We love how much is still there to explore; you can really get a sense of her shape, the bow and stern still relatively intact. What Vellamo offers is a genuine sense of history. You’re not just looking at a pile of wood; you’re exploring a vessel that sailed these cold waters. The timbers are dark, often covered in a thin film of green algae, and if you look closely, you’ll spot crab scuttling out from beneath planks and little blennies peeking from knot holes. It’s a quiet dive, often just you and the wreck, and our favourite part is imagining the stories she could tell. This one is for divers who appreciate a bit of maritime heritage over flashy corals.
