Why dive here
With 176+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue sharks, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - CITY OF BRISBANE offers some of Cornwall & Devon's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 10-18°C, warmest July, August, September.
The City of Brisbane, off the Lizard in Cornwall, is one of those wrecks that really gets under your skin. We love how she lies, mostly intact, given she went down in 1918. Dropping onto the deck at 20 metres, you immediately feel the scale of this old steamship. You can push into the cargo holds, or follow the prop shaft alley which is a favourite of ours for the sheer sense of exploration. Visibility here can be a bit of a lottery, as it often is in the UK, but when it’s good, the light penetrates deep, picking out the skeletal frames of the superstructure. Ling, conger eels, and pollack are everywhere, making the wreck their home. We’d suggest a slack water dive, as currents can pick up around the Lizard, making those deeper penetrations much less enjoyable. It’s a proper historical wreck dive, and while not for absolute beginners, anyone comfortable with UK conditions will find plenty to keep them coming back.
