CLARRIE - Cornwall & Devon

The *Clarrie* is a lovely little wreck, tucked away just off Guernsey, and we think she’s a real treat for a relaxed dive. We’ve always found this site perfect for a second dive of the day, or for anyone who just wants to potter around a wreck without the usual depth or current challenges. She’s a steamship, 29 metres long, that went down in 1921 after striking Roustel Rock. Today, she lies broken but largely intact at only 13 metres. The bow section is particularly good, with her anchor chain still spilling out onto the seabed. We love poking around the boiler, which is now a bustling apartment block for conger eels, and the stern, where you’ll often find dogfish resting on the sand. The wreck attracts plenty of wrasse and pollock, darting through the rusted metalwork. Visibility can be hit or miss, typical of the Channel, but when it’s good, the light plays beautifully through the superstructure, making for some atmospheric shots. Our top tip: dive her on a slack tide, particularly during neaps, to really take your time exploring the nooks and crannies.
