Why dive here
With 176+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue sharks, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - ETOILE POLAIRE offers some of Cornwall & Devon's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 10-18°C, warmest July, August, September.
The Etoile Polaire is one of those wrecks we keep coming back to. Sunk in 1987, this 7.9m sailing vessel now sits upright at a very manageable 17m. We love how light the dive feels, even on a cloudy day, thanks to the shallow depth. You’ll find the deck pretty much intact, and there’s enough structure for a quick swim-through if you’re careful with your buoyancy. What really makes the Etoile Polaire shine for us is the life it holds. The mast is often covered in jewel anemones, a proper splash of colour against the grey. Look closely, and you’ll spot dogfish tucked into crevices and often a playful conger eel peeking from beneath the stern. It's a superb site for newer wreck divers looking to build confidence without strong currents or deep profiles. Our favourite time to visit is on a slack tide, an hour either side of high water, when visibility tends to be at its best.
