G-AZWZ - Cornwall & Devon

The G-AZWZ, resting just shy of Worthing Pier, is a proper oddity, a true standalone in the UK’s wreck scene. We love a historical piece, and this aircraft, a Vickers Viscount that ditched after a bird strike in 1975, has a story you can almost feel in the water. At a maximum depth of 6 metres, it's shallow enough for a long bottom time, perfect for really soaking in the details. What you get here is a surprisingly intact airframe, given the incident. We often find sections of fuselage, wings, and sometimes even a propeller blade poking out from the sand, all encrusted with sea squirts and dead man’s fingers. Shoals of juvenile pollack dart in and out of the structural elements, and if you’re patient, you’ll spot gobies peering from crevices. It’s a gentle dive, suited to divers who appreciate wreck history over ripping currents. We’d suggest going on a calm day; visibility here can be surprisingly good, but strong onshore winds will stir things up fast. Look for the glint of sunlight catching the barnacled metal – it’s a unique sight.
