GENTRICE - Cornwall & Devon

The Gentrice is one of those wrecks we return to, time and again. She’s a steamship, sunk in 1914, lying upright in around 35 metres of water. We love a wreck that still looks like a ship, and the Gentrice certainly does. You can fin around her superstructure, imagine the steam rising from her boilers. Visibility here can be a bit of a lottery, as it often is in British waters, but when it's good, say 10 metres, the light filters down, illuminating the brass fittings and the occasional porthole. Our favourite moment is dropping onto the bow, feeling that cold embrace of the Atlantic, and watching the conger eels glide through the darker sections of the holds. The wreck is heavily colonised by jewel anemones and dead man’s fingers, adding splashes of unexpected colour to the steel. This dive suits experienced cold water wreck divers who appreciate history and don't mind a bit of a deeper profile. Always check the tides; she can have a bit of a push, especially on spring tides.
