GOLIATH - Cornwall & Devon

The Goliath is one of those wrecks that just grabs you. We often find ourselves drawn back to it, largely because it’s such a robust, intact old trawler. Sunk in ’69, it feels like a time capsule, sitting upright on the seabed near Hartland Point. You can really get a sense of its working life before it went down. The bow section is particularly good, still very defined, and we love poking around the bridge area. What makes it special for us is the way the marine life has completely taken over. Big shoals of pollack often swirl around the superstructure, and if you look closely, you’ll find plenty of lobsters tucked into every crevice. We’ve had some cracking encounters with conger eels here too, sometimes just their heads peering out from a dark pipe. It’s a site that rewards multiple visits; you always spot something new. It’s not a deep dive, making it accessible for most divers who are comfortable with wreck penetration, even if just a little. Just remember that currents can be a factor, so pick your slack water carefully.
