Why dive here
With 176+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue sharks, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - HARSTAD offers some of Cornwall & Devon's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 10-18°C, warmest July, August, September.
The Harstad, lying deep in Lyme Bay, is one of those wrecks that just *feels* right. We love the history here, a trawler sunk by an E-boat back in ‘43, it's a proper piece of wartime archaeology. Dropping onto her deck at 49 metres, you’re often met with a ghostly quiet, just the creak of your kit and the occasional thrum of a passing boat far above. She’s largely intact, offering some great penetration for those qualified and comfortable with the depth. Inside, we’ve found conger eels coiled in dark corners and sometimes a lobster peering out from a shattered porthole. Our favourite time to dive her is on a calm slack water morning, when the visibility often opens up to a good 10-15 metres, letting you really appreciate her scale. Strong currents can sweep through here, so pick your tide window carefully, and be ready for a significant decompression. This is a dive for experienced wreck heads, no doubt about it.
