The HMS Loyalty, known to some as the former HMS Rattler, is a proper dive for those who appreciate a bit of history with their nitrogen. Resting at 49 metres off the coast of Cornwall, this Algerine-class minesweeper went down in 1944, struck by a homing torpedo from U-480. We love how intact she remains for a wreck of her age and depth. You can often make out the bow gun, some of the superstructure, and the propeller, which is always a treat to see still in place. Our favourite part is dropping down through the often green but surprisingly clear water, watching the dark shape resolve into the familiar lines of a wartime vessel. Inside, you’ll find plenty of open spaces to carefully explore, with curious pollack and conger eels often making an appearance from behind collapsed plating. This isn't a dive for beginners; the depth and potential for currents mean you need solid deep-diving experience. It's a proper British wreck dive – a bit dark, a bit silty, but utterly rewarding for the story it tells and the life it now holds. Dive her on a calm day, ideally around slack water, and you'll get the best out of her.
