HMS WEAZLE - Cornwall & Devon

The HMS Weazle, sunk way back in 1799, isn't your deep, dramatic wreck dive, and that’s precisely why we love it. Lying at a mere 4 metres, this is more of an archaeological snorkel or a very shallow, relaxed dive. We're talking about a sloop vessel, 24 metres long, which met its end on Baggy Point after an unfortunate encounter with Morte Rocks. What’s left isn’t some grand, intact hull, but rather the scattered ribs and timbers, now completely colonised by the sea. You’ll find yourself finning over a tapestry of encrusting sponges and anemones, with small crabs scuttling amongst the old timbers. Schools of juvenile pollack often weave through the skeletal remains, darting between the rusty bolts that once held her together. It's a fantastic site for photographers keen on macro subjects, or for those just wanting a peaceful explore, feeling the history beneath them. Our tip: go at slack water on a calm day for the best visibility, which can swing from 2 metres to a lovely 8 metres on a good run. It's not a thrill-a-minute dive, but a wonderfully reflective one.
