KINDLY LIGHT - Cornwall & Devon

The Kindly Light is a proper slice of history. We’re talking a sailing vessel, sunk by gunfire from a German U-boat back in 1918. Diving this isn’t just about seeing a wreck, it’s about touching a moment in time. Sitting at 30 metres, she’s a dive for those comfortable with depth, but the rewards are there. The wooden hull is largely gone, but the ribs stand proud like a skeletal ghost ship, reaching up from the seabed. You can poke around the debris field, where plates and fittings are scattered amongst the kelp. This isn't a wreck with massive penetration, but the open structure allows for gentle exploration, tracing the lines of what she once was. We love how the resident conger eels have made themselves at home in the nooks and crannies. Keep an eye out for them, they're often peeking out. The visibility can vary, as with any site in UK waters, but on a good day, the light filtering through the kelp forest that’s grown around her is genuinely atmospheric. It’s a quiet, contemplative dive, a stark reminder of a different era. Our tip: go on a slack tide for the best experience, it makes all the difference when you’re trying to absorb the history.
