LADY KAMILLA - Cornwall & Devon

The Lady Kamilla is one of those wrecks we keep coming back to, a proper deep dive that still offers plenty of character despite the years. She lies upright, an 53-metre motor vessel sunk during a brutal Force 9 gale on Christmas Eve, 1977. Seven lives were lost that night, a sombre thought as you descend into the green twilight. Dropping down, the stern is often the first thing that materialises, heavily colonised with plumose anemones and dead man’s fingers. There’s a wonderful sense of scale here, the deck houses still largely intact. We love exploring the holds, which are surprisingly open and often shelter conger eels – some of them absolute monsters. Visibility can be a challenge, as with many UK sites, but when it’s good, the sheer amount of life that has claimed this steel hull is genuinely impressive. Look for jewel anemones catching the light, and pollack patrolling the superstructure. This is a dive for experienced technical divers, comfortable with the depth and the often challenging conditions. Our advice? Pick your weather window carefully, and allow plenty of bottom time for a proper explore.
