LE FLIBUSTIER - Cornwall & Devon

The Le Flibustier is a proper little time capsule, a 14-meter fishing trawler that went down a while back and now sits upright, almost perfectly intact, at 20 meters. It’s not some grand ocean liner, but that’s precisely why we love it. You can really get a feel for the vessel, tracing the wheelhouse, seeing the mast, even poking around where the hold would have been. What makes it a standout for us isn’t just the history, though it's compelling. It’s the way the local marine life has utterly embraced it. The bow is often draped in wrasse, bold and curious, while conger eels routinely peer from the nooks and crannies. We’ve had some cracking dives here when the visibility hits 10-12 meters; it’s enough to let the ambient light filter down and illuminate the greens and browns of the kelp and anemones that have taken hold. Our top tip? Go on a slack tide, otherwise, the currents can make it a bit of a workout. It’s an ideal wreck for those who appreciate a tangible piece of history that’s now thriving as an artificial reef, without being overly deep or complex.
