L'ESPERANCE - Cornwall & Devon

L’Esperance, off the coast of Cornwall, is one of those wrecks we keep coming back to. A French trawler, she went down in ’72, and since then, the ocean has really made her its own. We love that she’s shallow, only 20 metres, so you get plenty of bottom time to properly snoop around. Dropping down onto her, you’re usually met with a cloud of pollack and bib, almost a curtain of silver fish, often making the initial view a bit hazy. But push through that and the wreck opens up. The stern is our favourite part, with the propeller still intact, now completely encrusted in colourful jewel anemones and dead man's fingers. You can often spot lobsters tucked into the nooks and crannies of the superstructure, and if you bring a torch, the darker internal spaces reveal conger eels peering out from pipes and collapsed sections. It’s a proper historical dive, not just a pile of metal, with a real sense of her working life before the sea claimed her. Visibility can be hit or miss, typical of the Channel, but even on a greener day, the sheer volume of life makes it worth it. Best dived on slack water, obviously.
