L'INDEPENDANT - Cornwall & Devon

L’Independent is a fishing vessel, 10.1m long, now lying broken on the seabed. It’s a shallow dive, maxing out at 10m, which means decent bottom time and plenty of light even on a cloudy day. We love this site for its accessibility and the way the wreck has become a home for so much local marine life. You’ll find the wreck split into several pieces, scattered across a rocky and sandy bottom. The stern section is the most intact, with the prop shaft still visible, though the propeller itself is long gone. Shoals of juvenile pollack often swirl around the main sections, darting into the gaps as you approach. Look closely amongst the torn metal plates and you’ll spot velvet swimming crabs scuttling, and colourful jewel anemones clinging to any available surface. We’d suggest a dive here on a calm day, perhaps even as a second dive when you’re looking for something relaxed but still interesting. It’s perfect for those who enjoy exploring smaller wrecks and observing the intricate ecosystems that form around them.
