MARGUERITE PRY - Cornwall & Devon

The Marguerite Pry sits deep, a proper technical dive at 56 metres, and that’s part of its appeal. We’re talking about a 61-metre cargo steamer, torpedoed back in 1918, and she’s a beauty for wreck fans. Drop down, and the stern section often comes into view first, surprisingly intact given its century on the seabed. You can often make out the propeller, maybe a glimpse of the rudder, before the true scale of the bow section starts to reveal itself. We love how the wreck has become a home, especially the resident conger eels. They are huge here, often poking their heads out from gaps in the decking or boiler rooms, watching you with an almost territorial air. The steel plates are draped in anemones, mostly jewel anemones, which add splashes of colour in the torchlight against the grey steel. On a good day, with decent visibility, the whole structure looms out of the green, a ghost ship from another era. Our advice? Plan for enough bottom time to really absorb the scale of the vessel, especially if you want to explore the cargo holds. This is a dive for those who appreciate history and don't mind the chill of the Atlantic.
