Why dive here
With 176+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue sharks, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - PETERSHAM (POSSIBLY) offers some of Cornwall & Devon's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 10-18°C, warmest July, August, September.
The Petersham, found off Trevose Head, is one of those wrecks we keep coming back to. She’s a decent size, over 100 meters long, and despite going down in a collision back in 1918, a lot of her structure is still there at 34 meters. You can really get a sense of her scale as you descend, the bow often feels like it’s looming out of the gloom. We love exploring the holds, especially with a good torch, where conger eels often peek out from behind bent metal. The deck plating has collapsed in places, creating interesting swim-throughs and overhangs that are now home to nudibranchs and jewel anemones. Current can be a factor here, so we always plan our dive for slack water to make the most of the bottom time. It’s a proper historical dive, a real piece of maritime history that’s been reclaimed by the sea, and one we’d suggest for experienced wreck divers comfortable with depth.
