ROMNY - Cornwall & Devon
The SS Romny, a 71.6m steamship torpedoed in 1918, lies at 50m, making it one for experienced wreck divers comfortable with depth. She's broken, but the stern section still holds a good shape, and you can pick out the propeller shaft as you move along. Given the depth, plan for shorter bottom times, but there’s enough structure to explore; think swim-throughs into cargo holds that are now home to conger eels and squat lobsters. Visibility here can be hit or miss, typical for the English Channel, so aim for slack tide on a neap for the best chance to take it all in. We often find schooling pollack darting through the superstructure.
