Why dive here
With 176+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue sharks, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - SAPHIR offers some of Cornwall & Devon's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 10-18°C, warmest July, August, September.
Diving the Saphir off the coast of Cornwall and Devon feels like stepping back into a maritime history textbook, albeit a very chilly one. This 74-meter steamship, torpedoed in 1918, rests upright at 27 meters, making for a straightforward descent onto a largely intact hull. We find the structure itself fascinating, particularly the triple-expansion engine, which is still a commanding presence midships. Over the years, the Saphir has become a home for local marine life-look for the resident conger eels tucked into crevices and plump wrasse patrolling the decks. It’s a rewarding dive for those who appreciate wreck history and don’t mind the bracing UK water.
