Protected Area
South Dorset
Why dive here
With 176+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue sharks, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - SPIRAL (POSSIBLY) offers some of Cornwall & Devon's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 10-18°C, warmest July, August, September.
Diving the Spiral, a steamship that went down in 1916 after a run-in with UB-18, is a trip into a very specific piece of history. Lying at 56 metres, this isn't one for the casual diver. What you’ll find is a substantial wreck, 75 metres long, still holding much of its original form, including that triple-expansion engine. We've seen conger eels make impressive homes in the darker parts of the hull, and often, schools of pollack will swirl just above the decks. It’s a compelling dive for those with deep wreck experience, offering a quiet, reflective exploration rather than a frantic wildlife show.
