GRINDER - Northumberland & Northeast

Grinder is one of our picks for a deeper wreck dive off the Northumberland coast. This isn't a site for the faint-hearted, dropping to 43 metres, but the rewards are there if you're comfortable with the depth. She was a wooden tug, built way back in 1868, and went down in 1919. You can really feel that history as you descend onto her. We love the skeletal remains of her wooden hull, still largely intact, which is quite rare for a wreck of this age in British waters. Sunlight struggles to reach her at this depth, so the atmosphere is wonderfully eerie, and your torch beam will pick out the resident wolf fish tucked into crevices, along with ling and conger eels that have made the darker corners their home. Look for the large propeller, often coated in plumose anemones, standing sentinel off the stern. It's a dive that requires good buoyancy and a keen eye, but for those who appreciate the quiet drama of a historical wreck, Grinder offers a genuinely rewarding experience. We’d suggest picking a slack tide for the best visibility, otherwise, the current can make navigating the deeper parts a bit of a workout.
