NEW TRANSPORT - Northumberland & Northeast

The New Transport site is a proper curiosity, a small barge scuttled back in 1929, now sitting in just three metres of water. We love it for a quick shore dive, particularly when the sea’s a bit calmer and the sun’s out; that shallow depth means you get some great light play through the kelp. It’s not about grand scale or giant fish here, but rather a chance to properly slow down and look for the small stuff. You’re exploring an old working boat, its timbers and plating now a mosaic of rust and sea growth. We’ve spent ages just poking around the ribs, watching blennies dart between the gaps and velvet swimming crabs scuttling over the barnacles. It's a great spot for newer divers getting comfortable with wreck penetration, or for anyone who enjoys a long, relaxed potter with a macro lens. Look closely and you’ll find nudibranchs, often some colourful ones, clinging to the encrusted metalwork. Our favourite time to dive it is an hour either side of slack high water; the visibility tends to be best then, and the light really brings out the textures. It’s a good little taster of North Sea history, right there on the seabed.
