DAGHESTAN (PROBABLY) - Scapa Flow, Orkney

The *Daghestan* (probably) is one of those Scapa Flow dives that truly gets under your skin. We love it because it’s deep enough to feel like a proper expedition, yet clear enough to let you really take it all in. Dropping onto the deck at 57 metres, you’re greeted by the ghostly outlines of three huge boilers and the impressive triple expansion engine. It’s a silent, solemn place down there, the steel structures draped in white plumose anemones, their frilly polyps gently waving in the faint current. For experienced technical divers, this tanker offers a real sense of exploration. We'd suggest allowing plenty of bottom time to navigate the open engine room, imagine the sheer scale of the ship before she was torpedoed by U-57. Keep an eye out for conger eels peering from dark recesses; they’re surprisingly common here, and sometimes you’ll spot a wolfish lurking amongst the plates. Visibility often holds around 10-15 metres, which is brilliant for a wreck of this depth. The *Daghestan* isn’t for the faint of heart, but for those who make the journey, it’s a dive that lingers long after you’ve surfaced.
