DERFFLINGER - Scapa Flow, Orkney

Derfflinger. Just the name itself brings a shiver. She’s a beast, one of the last true giants of the German High Seas Fleet left to us in Scapa Flow. We absolutely love this wreck because it’s shallow, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s an easy dive. At only 10 metres, it’s accessible to many, yet often feels like a deep dive in terms of conditions. Visibility here can vary wildly, from 20 metres of green light to a murky five, so pick your day. What you get is an immense, flattened hull, the sheer scale of it still palpable even after a century on the seabed. We often find ourselves just floating above her, tracing the outlines of what were once powerful turrets and intricate superstructures. Look for the massive prop shafts and the immense boiler room access points. Dogfish tuck themselves into the folds of twisted metal, and tiny crabs scuttle over rivets. The light filtering down through the kelp, even on a cloudy day, creates an ethereal, almost melancholic atmosphere. It’s a dive that speaks volumes about history and the relentless power of the sea, best suited for those who appreciate wrecks as monuments, not just playgrounds.
