FREYA (POSSIBLY) - Scapa Flow, Orkney

Oh, Freya. We love a good Scapa Flow wreck that isn't one of the big German battleships. Not that we don't adore those too, but Freya has a charm all her own. This old fishing vessel, sunk back in '59 after a proper hammering from three monster waves, lies at a comfortable 45 metres. You’ll drop down into that classic Scapa green, feeling the chill even through a drysuit, and suddenly she just appears – upright, surprisingly intact, and a proper sight to behold. The wheelhouse is still there, much of the superstructure too, creating loads of nooks and crannies to explore. We’ve found her to be a haven for wolf fish, often tucked away in the darker corners, and the usual suspects of ling and conger eels winding through the plates. The deck fittings, winches, and even the mast are often still identifiable, all draped in anemones and dead man’s fingers. Our favourite part is poking around the bow, imagining those waves that finally took her. It’s a dive that suits those with experience in colder water and deeper wrecks, offering a fantastic contrast to Scapa’s more famous iron behemoths. You’ll come up with a real sense of history, and maybe a little shiver from the depths.
