GIRL ANGELA - Scapa Flow, Orkney

The Girl Angela in Scapa Flow, she's one of those wrecks that really grows on you. It’s a fishing vessel, and while not a colossal German battleship, we think she holds her own at 30 metres. The bow points north, and the whole wreck lies pretty much intact on a sandy seabed. You can swim into the wheelhouse, which is always a treat, and the stern section often has a lovely cloud of small fish darting around. What we really love here is the way the light filters through the Orkney water onto the deck fittings, all draped in anemones and dead man’s fingers. The colours are surprisingly vibrant. We've seen conger eels poking out from the engine room, and the odd inquisitive ballan wrasse will often come right up to your mask. It's a proper Scapa dive, a bit chilly, a bit dark, but always rewarding. Our pick for a good second dive after something bigger, or when the weather's a bit frisky and you need something sheltered. Just watch for the current, it can pick up here, especially around the tides.
