GUIDING STAR - Scapa Flow, Orkney

Alright, let’s talk about the Guiding Star. It’s a fishing vessel, and while Scapa Flow is famous for its battleships, there’s a real charm to these smaller, working wrecks. We love the intimacy here; it feels like you're exploring a personal story rather than a war grave. Sunk off the southwest coast of Priest Island, the Guiding Star sits in the shallows, making it an excellent dive for those looking for an easy, rewarding exploration. You’ll find her hull largely intact, draped in kelp that sways with the gentle surge. Inside, the wheelhouse is a highlight; we often spot inquisitive wrasse darting between the gauges, and sometimes a cheeky crab has taken up residence in what used to be a locker. The light penetration is usually fantastic, painting the interior in shifting greens and blues, which makes for some lovely photos. It’s a fantastic site for newer wreck divers or anyone who appreciates the quiet beauty of a fishing boat slowly returning to the sea. Bring a torch, though, to really peer into the darker corners and find those hiding creatures.
