Why dive here
With 140+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue whales, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - HANSI offers some of Scapa Flow, Orkney's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 8-14°C, warmest July, August, September.
The HANSI, a steamship that ran aground in Linklet Bay back in 1939, offers a different kind of Scapa Flow dive. It’s a shallow wreck, with parts of the hull and superstructure visible even at the surface, making it an excellent spot for newer wreck divers or those looking for a longer bottom time. We found the stern section particularly interesting, with various crabs and small fish darting in and out of the plating. It’s not one of Scapa's deep German fleet wrecks, but its accessible depth and the way the sea has reclaimed it make for a pleasant, relaxed dive when the conditions are calm.
Safety Notes
Wreck site - avoid penetration without wreck diving certification. Watch for sharp metal and entanglement hazards.
Cold water this month (avg 13°C). Drysuit or thick wetsuit (7mm+) recommended.
