Scapa Flow has its share of big, meaty wrecks, but we always find ourselves drawn back to HMS Daring. This D-class destroyer, scuttled in 1932, sits on her port side, mostly intact and offering a truly absorbing dive. You descend onto the hull, often greeted by a swirling cloud of coalfish, then trace your way along her length. What we love here are the details. Her stern guns are still in place, surprisingly complete, and the davits are clearly visible, draped in kelp. The swim-throughs are a highlight; navigating the engine room offers a real sense of exploration, though it’s snug in places so check your buoyancy. Look closely in the darker corners for ling, and sometimes a monstrous conger eel peeking out. The visibility can vary quite a bit, but when it’s good, the natural light streaming through the decks makes it feel truly atmospheric. It’s a dive for those who appreciate the history and the silent, slow reclamation by the sea.

    Safety Notes
