HMS DEWEY EVE - Scapa Flow, Orkney

The HMS *Dewey Eve* is a great little dive, particularly if you’re looking for a Scapa Flow wreck that isn’t deep or demanding. We love it as a second dive, a relaxed exploration after tackling one of the bigger battleships. Sitting upright at a comfortable 10 metres, she’s a drifter, sunk by a mine in 1940. We’ve found her to be quite intact, with the bow section often standing a good few metres proud of the seabed. You can often poke around the stern too, where the single propeller and rudder are usually clear. The engine room is open, her triple expansion engine and boiler are still very much in place, sometimes shrouded in those green fronds of kelp that dance in the gentle surge. It’s an easy swim-through for confident divers. Look for the small conger eels tucked into any dark corner, and the sheer number of squat lobsters clinging to every surface. The visibility can be surprisingly good on a calm day, letting you see the whole wreck laid out, a real gem for photographers. Perfect for divers who want a genuine piece of history without the deco obligation.
