KARLSRUHE - Scapa Flow, Orkney

The KARLSRUHE. Even among Scapa Flow’s giants, she stands out. Dropping onto her, you’re immediately struck by the sheer scale. She lies on her starboard side at 22 metres, almost completely intact, just waiting for exploration. We love how her huge forward guns still point defiantly towards the surface, encrusted with anemones and soft corals. It's a proper swim-through wreck, with plenty of entry points into the superstructure. Inside, it’s dark, silty, and utterly atmospheric. Bring a good torch. You’ll find schools of cod and pollock hanging in the gloom, and if you’re lucky, a conger eel or two peeking from a porthole. Our favourite section is the bow, where the damage from the scuttling is still visible, a testament to the crew's final act. Navigating through the mess decks, you get a real sense of the ship's past life. This isn't a dive for beginners; currents can pick up, and the silty interior demands good buoyancy. But for experienced wreck divers, the KARLSRUHE is an absolute classic. She offers an incredibly tangible link to history.
