KASPAROFF - Scapa Flow, Orkney

Kasparoff. Now this is one of our favourite little wrecks in Scapa Flow, particularly if the weather’s keeping you in the bay and you’re looking for something a bit different from the German High Seas Fleet. She’s a small fishing vessel, went down in 2000 after taking on water, and she’s sitting upright in about 21 metres. What we love about Kasparoff is how much life she’s accumulated in a relatively short time. The deck is carpeted in anemones, purple and orange, and the whole structure hums with squat lobsters peeking out of every crevice. You’ll find conger eels tucked away in the more sheltered parts of the wheelhouse, and often a grumpy wolfish hiding amongst the debris on the seabed nearby. Her compact size means you can really take your time, exploring every nook. We’d suggest a slow pass, looking closely at the winches and fishing gear still in place. It’s a gentle dive, perfect for a long bottom time, and a real chance to appreciate the resilience of marine life.
